Vacations seem to conjure up thoughts of feasting on rich foods such as ice cream, caramel corn, taffy, fresh cut French fries, and pizza. But can you enjoy vacation foods and indulge without gaining weight? You certainly can.

Indulgences are important for any good vacation and should actually be part of your regular healthy eating habits.  One of the reasons diets fail is because people feel so deprived and restricted.  This often triggers cravings, which eventually leads to binging.  This kind of indulging is self-defeating and dangerous and results in weight gain and feelings of regret.

Vacation is the perfect time.  Moderation is an important key to healthy eating habits. The first few bites of a food provide the most taste satisfaction.  Be mindful about each and every bite and work towards becoming satisfied with the smallest portion possible.

Your food desires and cravings are shaped by your own personal food experiences.  Since we all have unique food experiences, the foods we crave on vacation will vary too.  Whatever your indulgence, be conscientious of your portion and frequency of indulging.  Often, the vacation foods of your youth are the ones you crave.  Instead of buying large portions for yourself, consider ordering smaller portions and sharing them with your family or friends.  Eating smaller portions makes a big difference in total calories consumed.

Even while on vacation, remember to eat nutrient rich foods first, such as plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources like fish, chicken and lean beef, as well as whole grains and non-fat or low-fat dairy products.

Indulgences that also provide some health benefits include:

  • Dark Chocolate
  • Avocado/Guacamole
  • Nuts
  • Dried Fruit
  • Trail Mixes
  • Flavored Yogurt
  • Fruit Smoothies
  • Cheese
  • Specialty Coffee Drinks
  • Hot chocolate

Vacations offer multiple opportunities for increased physical activities.  Without the usual work schedules, time is available to be filled.  Why not choose to add physical activities such as walking, biking, canoeing, playing tennis, swimming?  Burning more calories while on vacation will help make up for the extra calories you're consuming by adding those vacation treats.

Splurging while on vacation doesn't have to ruin healthy eating habits or end up with weight gain.  Remember to enjoy your favorite healthy foods everyday and allow yourself splurges in moderation for better health.
