Jazzercise: Dance Your Way To Fitness

Part dance party, part exercise class, Jazzercise is a dance fitness phenomenon.  If you're tired of the same old aerobics class and looking for something more motivating than the treadmill then Jazzercise might be your perfect solution.  Dance your way to fitness with this heart pumping, fast-paced recipe for fun.

Jazzercise has been around for more than 40 years. This popular, successful dance fitness program began as jazz dance classes that were redesigned for clients who wanted more of a weight-loss, fitness focus than dancer's training. Today, most Jazzercise classes use a 60-minute total body workout format that incorporates dance with resistance training, Pilates, kickboxing, yoga, and hip-hop.

Jazzercise combines dance-based cardio with strength/core training using hand weights, resistance tubes and exercise balls and wraps up with stretching.  Choreographed to music ranging from rock, funk, Top 40, country and more, Jazzercise popularity is based on its party-like atmosphere.

Founder Judi Sheppard Missett choreographs new routines to the most current music every ten weeks so classes never get old.  Instructors offer a range of age-appropriate music however, so have no fear that you'll be working out to your kid's playlist.

The classic Jazzercise class has branched out over the years and now includes a wide variety of dance fitness formats.

  • Jazzercise Lite is perfect for newcomers, seniors, pregnant women or people who prefer low-impact aerobics.
  • Jazzercise for Body Sculpting concentrates on muscle toning.
  • Jazzercise Circuit Training offers aerobics, strength training and flexibility exercises with a cross training focus.
  • Jazzercise Step is a low-impact, high-intensity variation on a classic step class.
  • Jazzercise Juniors is customized for kids ages 6 to 11.
  • Jazzercise Express packs it all into 30 minutes.
  • Jazzercise Personal Touch offers a small class experience for advanced clients who want to kick up the intensity.
  • Jazzercise Team Program is designed for teens and promotes nutrition, dance education and fitness.

Offered in all 50 states and 32 countries Jazzercise franchises and programs are virtually everywhere.  To find a class, log on to the Jazzercise website or check with your fitness or community center.  If you prefer to workout at home or can't find a class nearby, Jazzercise offers workouts on DVD (for sale on their website).

Don't think you can dance?  Don't be intimidated.  No dance experience is necessary.  Beginners learn as they go in this all-inclusive, open to every body environment. Jazzercise also teaches the basic moves online so people who are new to dance (or with two left feet) can practice the basics before they hit the studio floor.

Two-time Dancing With The Stars champion, Cheryl Burke, Jazzercise celebrity spokesperson sums up the Jazzercise dance fitness experience.  "It targets.  It tones.  Push your body. Find your beat.  Get head-to-toe sexy in 60 minutes."  Now that's motivating.
